The Arcane Conservatory

Located on the Shrouded Isle, the Arcane Conservatory is the largest and most prestigious library in Starfall Rest. This sprawling sanctuary of knowledge, open to all who seek it, is maintained by the Luminal Librarians, overseen by the kind yet firm guidance of Lorewarden Sylwen Faerondil.

The Arcane Conservatory

Located on the Shrouded Isle, the Arcane Conservatory is far more than a library—it is a beacon of knowledge, sanctuary, and magic for all of Starfall Rest. Renowned across the realm for its vast archives, the Conservatory serves as a cornerstone of scholarly and magical pursuits, attracting seekers of wisdom from all walks of life.

The Conservatory is not confined to a single building; it is a serene and sprawling campus surrounded by the Stormweald, an ancient forest nourished by the isle’s frequent rains and safeguarded by the Tree of Wisdom. This towering world tree, rooted at the heart of the campus in the Grand Foyer of the Main Library, extends its roots deep into the Stormweald, nurturing the forest and connecting its magic to the Conservatory.

The Main Library, crowned by the Tree of Wisdom, houses the largest and most important collection of books, scrolls, and magical texts in Starfall Rest. Surrounding it are smaller libraries, lecture halls, magical research laboratories, tranquil outdoor study spaces, and dormitories, all designed to foster learning and collaboration. The Conservatory’s buildings harmonize with the natural world, often constructed around ancient trees to ensure the island’s magical forest remains untouched.

Supporting this bastion of knowledge is a trained group of librarians, the Luminal Librarians, who have sworn oaths to aid all who seek knowledge, regardless of their allegiance, class, or creed. Their unwavering dedication ensures that the Conservatory remains a place of neutrality and sanctuary, where learning and wisdom are accessible to all.

Over the centuries, the Conservatory has grown to such a size and become so prestigious and indispensable that it has fostered an entire town, Stormhearth, on the Shrouded Isle. This bustling community exists to support the library, its keepers, and the countless scholars and students who arrive to study. From modest residences and quaint inns to artisan shops and taverns, the town thrives on the steady flow of visitors and the constant hum of scholarly activity.

The Arcane Conservatory is more than a library or a campus; it is a symbol of resilience, unity, and the transformative power of knowledge. Here, the light of learning shines brightly, guiding Starfall Rest’s seekers toward discovery, wisdom, and wonder.

History and Relocation

The Arcane Conservatory was not always nestled within the misty embrace of the Shrouded Isle. Its origins trace back to the Arcane Halls of the Mages’ Order, a grand structure that once housed the largest collection of knowledge in Starfall Rest. For centuries, it stood as a beacon of learning, drawing scholars and practitioners of magic from across the realm.

However, during the rise of the Shadow Concord—a dark and secretive organization bent on suppressing knowledge—the Arcane Halls, and its library, were sacked. Its treasures were plundered, its keepers slain, and much of its knowledge was lost to fire, destruction, and theft. This devastating loss awakened the Mages’ Order to the fragile nature of their most valuable resource: knowledge. Aware of the Aethereals deep respect for knowledge and learning, the Mages’ Order turned to the Aerie for assistance.

They formed a historic alliance to relocate the remnants of the library to a more secure location. After careful deliberation, they chose the Shrouded Isle, a secluded landmass surrounded by deep waters and persistent mist, ensuring protection from would-be invaders. The relocation was no small task—every surviving tome, scroll, and artifact was transported across the sea, an effort that took years to complete.

The Conservatory’s construction brought its own challenges. The Shrouded Isle was covered in the Stormweald, an ancient and magical forest deeply connected to its world tree, the Tree of Wisdom. While the mages argued for clearing the land to build, the aethereals insisted on preserving the forest’s unique magic. A compromise was struck:

  • Half of the island would remain untouched as protected forestland, with the Tree of Wisdom as its guardian.
  • Construction within the designated area would respect the land, with buildings designed around ancient trees to preserve the forest’s integrity.
  • Even in the growing town of Stormhearth, sprawl was restricted, encouraging vertical expansion and modest living spaces.

In addition to the forest’s natural protections, the mages and aethereals collaborated to create an artifact of extraordinary power: the Veilstone, capable of enveloping the island in an impenetrable mist when activated. This artifact became the ultimate safeguard, shielding the Conservatory from external threats and reinforcing its role as a sanctuary.

With the Arcane Conservatory’s completion, a new era of learning and collaboration began. Its purpose expanded beyond simply preserving knowledge; it became a symbol of unity between Starfall Rest’s peoples. Over the centuries, it has grown into the sprawling campus it is today, surrounded by the bustling town of Stormhearth and forever guarded by the ancient trees of the Stormweald.

Structures and Features

The Arcane Conservatory is a sprawling campus filled with architectural marvels and magical innovations, seamlessly blending learning with the natural beauty of the Stormweald. Beyond its iconic Main Library, several unique structures and features define its character:

The Underground Archives

Beneath the Conservatory lies a labyrinth of vaults and tunnels, meticulously carved from the earth by the daemon imps of the Stormhorn Mountains. These mischievous creatures were enlisted by the aethereals to help shape the archives, their innate talent for stonework producing vast, ornate chambers, connected by elaborate tunnels, where the Conservatory’s most precious tomes and artifacts are stored.

However, many imps grew attached to the island and the beautiful chambers they had built, and they chose to stay, creating a society of their own in the deeper reaches beyond the archives. While their craftsmanship is legendary, their penchant for mischief is less appreciated. Librarians navigating the archives often find themselves the target of impish pranks, from misplaced scrolls to enchanted objects that wander off on their own. Despite this, the imps are considered an essential part of the Conservatory’s story—and its charm.

The Stormhead Lighthouse

The Stormhead Lighthouse, a beacon of safety and magic, stands tall on the mist-shrouded Shrouded Isle. Its golden light, powered by an ancient artifact, guides travelers through treacherous waters to the sanctuary of the Arcane Conservatory.

Standing tall at the island’s edge, the Stormhead Lighthouse is a beacon of safety for travelers navigating the treacherous waters and persistent mist surrounding the Shrouded Isle. Its glowing light, powered by a magical artifact, pierces the veil of fog, guiding ships to the harbor.

The lighthouse is more than a functional structure; it has become a cherished symbol of the island. Over the years, a seaside park and garden have grown up around it, offering scenic views and tranquil pathways. The Stormhead Gardens are a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike, hosting picnics, quiet retreats, and romantic strolls. The lighthouse also serves as the setting for many beloved Stormhearth tales and legends, often woven into the lives of those who visit.

The Keeper of the Stormhead Lighthouse is a position of great honor and responsibility. The Keeper is selected from the ranks of the Sworn Guards, chosen for their unwavering dedication and service. The Keeper has many duties, including maintaining the magical beacon and serving as the lighthouse’s storyteller, offering daily tours and sharing its rich history.

The Grand Foyer and the Tree of Wisdom

The Grand Foyer of the Arcane Conservatory, crowned by the Tree of Wisdom, a world tree that stands as a breathtaking testament to harmony between nature and architecture. Its towering shelves and glass dome inspire awe in all who enter.

The Grand Foyer of the Main Library is an awe-inspiring space, made even more extraordinary by the presence of the Tree of Wisdom. A world tree of immense age and power, it is the beating heart of the Stormweald and an integral guardian of the Shrouded Isle’s balance. Its massive trunk rises at the above the entrance to the Grand Foyer, its roots stretching far beneath the campus, connecting to the magical lifeblood of the forest.

Its mighty branches reach upward toward the domed glass ceiling, allowing sunlight and moonlight to filter through and cast shimmering, dappled patterns across the marble floor. Students and scholars often gather at its base, drawn by the calming energy it radiates. Comfortable seating surrounds the trunk, creating spaces for quiet study, introspection, and impromptu discussions. To sit beneath the Tree of Wisdom is to feel a sense of connection—not just to the Stormweald, but to the vast currents of knowledge, magic, and life that flow through Starfall Rest.

The Luminal Tower

Located at the highest point of the campus, the Luminal Tower serves as both an observatory and a ceremonial hall for the Conservatory. Its enchanted telescopes allow scholars to study the stars and celestial phenomena, while the tower’s central chamber is used for special events, lectures, and ceremonies.

The Library of Music

The Library of Music, one of the Conservatory’s smaller libraries, harmoniously built around the ancient Chorus Oak. Here, the melodies of Starfall Rest are preserved and studied.

One of the many smaller libraries within the Arcane Conservatory, the Library of Music is a serene, intimate space dedicated to the preservation and study of music. Nestled around an ancient tree whose branches stretch toward the sunlight streaming through the tall windows, this library houses the Conservatory’s extensive collection of books, scrolls, and artifacts related to music.

From ancient hymns of the Aethereals to the lively ballads of the Thieves’ Guild, the Library of Music holds the melodies and rhythms of every corner of Starfall Rest. Its shelves are lined with manuscripts, magical instruments, and records of forgotten songs waiting to be rediscovered.

Scholars and musicians alike frequent this library, often inspired by the soft rustling of the tree’s leaves as they compose or study. The tree itself, known as the Chorus Oak, is rumored to hum faintly with magic, harmonizing with the creative energy of the space.

Starfall Plaza

At the heart of Stormhearth lies the Starfall Plaza, a bustling square where scholars and locals mingle. Lined with artisan shops, cafes, and taverns, it is the vibrant social hub of the island.

  • The Lantern’s Rest Tavern: A cozy gathering place where scholars share stories over mulled wine and musicians serenade patrons by firelight.
  • The Quill and Crescent Cafe: Famous for its herbal teas, fairy wine, and enchanted pastries that shimmer faintly in the light.

The plaza’s centerpiece is a fountain shaped like an open book, with water flowing like ink across its pages.

The Conservatory Arboretum

Adjacent to the Main Library, the Conservatory Arboretum serves as a living library of magical plants from across Starfall Rest. Carefully tended by the Luminal Librarians and a team of herbalists, the arboretum is a place of study and relaxation.

  • Highlights include the Moonblossom Vine, which blooms only under starlight, and the Amberwillow, whose sap has restorative properties.
  • Visitors can stroll through the arboretum’s winding paths or study rare plants in its glasshouses.

The Luminal Clock Tower

Rising above the Conservatory campus, the Luminal Clock Tower is both a functional timepiece and a beloved symbol of harmony and collaboration.

The tower’s melodic chimes, which resonate every hour, are thanks to a generous gift from the Witches of the Citadel. Although they did not participate in the Conservatory’s construction, the witches quickly recognized its significance and began contributing books, scrolls, and magical artifacts to its archives. The bells, imbued with enchantments to produce hauntingly beautiful tones, were crafted in the famed Forge of Thalgrim with the help of the dwarves and installed in the clock tower during the Conservatory’s early years.

The chimes are said to carry subtle magical properties, encouraging focus and serenity among scholars. Many visitors to the Conservatory recall hearing the bells for the first time as one of their most vivid memories, the sound lingering long after they leave the island.

Governance and Protection

The Arcane Conservatory stands as a beacon of knowledge, neutrality, and sanctuary—a position it has maintained through a carefully structured system of governance and dedicated protectors.

Independence from the Mages’ Order

The Conservatory’s status as an independent institution was not easily won. When the Mages’ Order first proposed relocating the library to the Shrouded Isle, they assumed it would remain under their direct control. However, the Aethereals of the Aerie, whose collaboration was essential to constructing the new Conservatory and its defenses, adamantly refused to work under the Mages’ governance.

For over a year, the two groups clashed over the library’s future. The aethereals argued that knowledge should serve all people, not be bound to a single faction’s interests. It was only when the Mages’ Order realized they could not rebuild the library—or create the powerful Veilstone—on their own that they agreed to the aethereals’ terms. Thus, the Conservatory became an independent institution, free from allegiance to any single group or nation.

This independence remains a cornerstone of the Conservatory’s identity, ensuring that it serves as a sanctuary of learning for all who seek it.

The Order of the Archives

The Conservatory is governed by the Order of the Archives, also known as the council of nine, a council of nine members who oversee its operations and uphold its neutrality. The Order is composed of:

  • The Lorewarden (Head Librarian of the Conservatory)
  • Three Luminal Librarians, elected by their peers
  • The Mayor of Stormhearth
  • The Captain of the Sworn Guards
  • A representative from the Mages’ Order
  • A representative from the Aethereals of the Aerie
  • A representative from the Starfall Rest Delegation, an organization that ensures the realm’s diverse factions are represented

While decisions are typically guided by consensus, the strong presence of librarians on the council ensures that the Conservatory’s interests remain paramount.

The Luminal Librarians

At the heart of the Conservatory’s operations are the Luminal Librarians, an elite group of scholars and loremasters sworn to neutrality. Their oaths bind them to serve all seekers of knowledge, regardless of faction, class, or creed.

  • The librarians are responsible for preserving and expanding the Conservatory’s archives, cataloging new discoveries, and assisting scholars in their pursuits.
  • They are also the custodians of the Conservatory’s sanctuary status, ensuring that no conflicts or allegiances disrupt its mission.

The Luminal Librarians’ commitment to neutrality has earned them respect—and sometimes ire—from across Starfall Rest, as their decisions often prioritize the pursuit of knowledge over political concerns.

The Sworn Guards

While the Shrouded Isle is a sanctuary, its guardianship is entrusted to the Sworn Guards—an elite force of warriors drawn from the ranks of the Mages’ Order and the Aethereals of the Aerie. Upon taking their oath, these warriors forsake all prior allegiances, pledging their loyalty solely to the Arcane Conservatory. Highly trained and deeply respected, the Sworn Guards have two primary duties:

  1. To protect the Shrouded Isle and its inhabitants from external threats.
  2. To enforce the sanctuary’s neutrality by expelling any who bring conflict to its grounds.

Their strict neutrality and swift actions have ensured that the Conservatory remains a safe haven for scholars and visitors alike. Even the faintest whisper of a guard’s presence is often enough to quell disputes before they arise.

The Arcane Conservatory’s governance and protection systems are a testament to the collaboration—and occasional friction—between Starfall Rest’s most powerful factions. Together, they ensure that this sanctuary of learning remains a light for all who seek wisdom and truth.

Home Day: The Festival of the Veil

Home Day at sunset, as the vibrant festivities light up Stormhearth. With colorful market stalls, glowing lanterns, and dazzling fireworks, the annual celebration brings the Shrouded Isle to life in a magical display of unity and joy.

Each year, the Arcane Conservatory tests the Veilstone, the magical artifact that shrouds the island in an impenetrable mist, ensuring it functions flawlessly should the island ever need to be sealed off from the outside world. Over time, this simple test has evolved into an annual festival known as Home Day, a day of celebration that draws visitors from across Starfall Rest.

On Home Day, the Luminal Librarians and Sworn Guards perform the ceremonial activation of the Veilstone at dawn, enveloping the island in a thick, magical fog. Once the mist forms its protective dome, no one can enter or leave the island until it dissipates at the day’s end. This has become part of the festival’s charm—visitors must arrive before the Veilstone is activated, adding an air of exclusivity and excitement.

Once the island is sealed, Home Day festivities begin in earnest:

  • Sports Contests: From friendly duels and archery competitions to magical obstacle courses, visitors and locals alike participate in games of skill and strength.
  • Artisan Markets: The streets of Stormhearth come alive with vibrant stalls selling unique crafts, enchanted trinkets, and one-of-a-kind wares.
  • Food and Drink: Special dishes and drinks are served only on Home Day, including the famous Veilstone Brew, a shimmering blue ale, and Mistcakes, light, airy pastries dusted with edible glitter.
  • Music and Dancing: Musicians fill the air with lively tunes, and town squares transform into dance floors where revelers swirl and sway late into the evening.

As the sun sets behind the mist, the Conservatory marks the festival’s conclusion with a breathtaking fireworks display. As the veil drops, the vibrant colors and sparkling lights seem to dance across the sky as the Veilstone’s magic fades. By the time the mist fully dissipates, the island is alight with joy and celebration, leaving visitors eager for the next Home Day.

Moonwinkle’s Meowments

Did you know? While the daemon imps of the Underground Archives vex the Luminal Librarians to no end, Moonwinkle considers them close friends. In fact, she’s the only creature in the entire Conservatory who has ever been invited into the imps’ hidden village—a secret network of tiny homes and glowing mushroom gardens tucked deep within the tunnels.

The librarians originally brought Moonwinkle to the Conservatory as a kitten, believing her to be an ordinary cat, albeit one with unusually dark eyes. She was tasked with scaring the imps back to their deeper tunnels away from the Underground Archives. However, Moonwinkle had other plans. Far from intimidating the imps, she quickly charmed them with her playful antics, forging an unexpected friendship. As she grew, her true nature revealed itself: she bonded with Sylwen, and her eyes began to glow aqua, marking her as a magical cat. Over the years, she has become a regular visitor to the imps’ hidden world, slipping through passages too small for anyone else to follow.

On her visits, Moonwinkle enjoys imp-made treats (especially enchanted biscuits that taste like fresh fish) and listens to their stories of ancient times. She’s even helped them name their pet rats, though her suggestions—like “Fishbait” and “Sir Squeak-a-Lot”—don’t always go over well. The imps, for their part, adore Moonwinkle and consider her an honorary member of their mischief.

The librarians, of course, sigh in exasperation every time she returns from these excursions with glowing mushrooms in her fur or tiny imp-crafted trinkets hanging from her collar. But Sylwen can’t help but smile—after all, Moonwinkle’s unique friendship with the imps has allowed Sylwen to open a dialogue with them, and they, very occasionally, will actually heed her words.
