Hannah Farrowlight

From the bustling streets of Stormhearth, through the grueling training of the Battle Mages in the Horngate, to the mist-shrouded heights of the Stormhead Lighthouse, Hannah Farrowlight’s journey was one of determination and an unshakable love for the Shrouded Isle. Through tireless dedication and hard work, she became the youngest Keeper in history, turning her childhood dream into a legacy that would inspire generations.

The Spark

Born and raised in the town of Stormhearth on the Shrouded Isle, Hannah Farrowlight grew up in a bustling bakery owned by her parents. From the time she could toddle, she was captivated by the beauty and magic of the Stormhead Lighthouse, often declaring to anyone who would listen, “I’ll be Keeper one day.” She spent many days of her childhood at the lighthouse, where she befriended the Keeper, Brannon of Lorren. Brannon, seeing her fascination, took the time to teach her about the lighthouse’s magic and history, further igniting her passion.

Though her parents supported her dream, they gently reminded her that only a Sworn Guard, chosen from mages and aethereals, could hold the position. Undeterred, 8-year-old Hannah crafted her Amazing Plan to Become the Most Awesome Keeper Ever, a childhood blueprint that became the foundation of her life’s work. With her parents’ help, she outlined a plan in five ambitious phases.

Phase One: The Arcane Conservatory

To even have a chance at becoming Keeper, Hannah knew she’d need to join the Mages’ Order. Lacking innate magical talent, she threw herself into her studies at The Arcane Conservatory, devouring every book she could find. Her childhood friend, Rowan Braveborne, who had innate talent for magic and loved the art of spellcraft, often helped her study. Rowan passed his entrance exams to the Arcane Halls in the Horngate with flying colors. With Rowan’s help and countless late-night study sessions, Hannah also passed the rigorous exams. Though her scores weren’t as high as Rowan’s, she earned her place at the prestigious school through sheer determination.

While Rowan was eager to leave the Shrouded Isle and embrace the wider world of magic, Hannah’s heart remained firmly tethered to her home. For Rowan, the Arcane Halls were a dream come true: a place where his talent could shine, and opportunities for travel and adventure awaited. For Hannah, it was a stepping-stone, a necessary trial on her path to becoming a Keeper. Her passion wasn’t for magic itself but for the future it promised her.

Phase Two: The Arcane Halls

A young Hannah Farrowlight arrives at the Arcane Halls in the Horngate, ready to embark on the next step of her journey to becoming a Keeper.

Four years of hard work lay before her. To be accepted into the Mages’ Order, she had to achieve the rank of Journeyman Mage. Magic didn’t come easily to her, but she excelled at studying and leaned on her friends for support. Her group of companions, Rowan among them, quickly realized that Hannah’s determination and knack for organization made her an invaluable ally. She helped them with rote memorization, note-taking, and exam preparation, while they tutored her in practical spellcasting, charms, and ward-building.

Despite her initial struggles, Hannah found joy and camaraderie at the Arcane Halls. She grew close to her peers, sharing late-night study sessions, magical mishaps, and quiet moments of reflection beneath the towering spires of the Horngate. Rowan often teased her about her single-minded focus on her dream, but he and her other friends admired her relentless dedication.

By the time she achieved the rank of Journeyman Mage at 22, Hannah had not only earned a place in the Mages’ Order but also forged friendships and gained the confidence to face the next phase of her plan. While her peers looked forward to pursuing careers as scholars, spellcrafters, and magical researchers, Hannah knew her path lay elsewhere. Her heart remained with the lighthouse and the Shrouded Isle, her dream as steadfast as when she was a child.

Phase Three: Journeyman Mage

Phase Three of Hannah’s plan required her to say goodbye to Rowan. While he pursued his dream of traveling across Starfall Rest on assignment for the Mages’ Order, Hannah turned her focus inward, preparing for the next challenge: joining the Battle Mages. This elite force of warrior mages was known for its rigorous training and high standards… and it was the only path to the Sworn Guards.

For a year, Hannah pushed herself harder than ever before. She trained relentlessly to build the strength and endurance required for the grueling physical tests. Though her spellwork remained average, her determination and unmatched physical prowess set her apart. She became known for her relentless drive, often staying long after others had called it a day, perfecting her techniques and pushing her limits.

When the time came to face the trials, Hannah was ready. While her offensive spellcasting didn’t shine as brightly as some of the more gifted recruits, her exceptional physical performance and tactical skills outclassed everyone. Her sheer grit and unyielding dedication earned her a spot in the Battle Mages, the next step toward her ultimate goal of becoming a Keeper.

Phase Four: Battle Mage

In her first year as a Battle Mage, Hannah Farrowlight faced her first major trial when the Battle Mages were summoned to the research labs of the Arcane Halls. A rogue spell construct, unleashed during an experimental build, had spiraled out of control, threatening the lives of the engineers and assistants. Hannah’s team, Alpha Chi, moved like a perfectly synchronized dance, each member executing their role with precision. Positioned on point, Hannah kept the construct’s attention focused on her with blasts of brilliant blue flame, while her teammates struck from the flanks and rear, disabling the dangerous creation with calculated efficiency.

For the Mages’ Order, the Sworn Guards are recruited exclusively from the ranks of the Battle Mages, making it a prestigious—and competitive—position. Hannah knew that simply being competent wouldn’t be enough to secure her place; she had to stand out.

Her application to the Sworn Guards was already impressive, boasting solid grades, glowing recommendations from three of her professors, and the added distinction of being a citizen of the Shrouded Isle. Still, with three years to go before the next Recruitment Poster would be listed, Hannah used the time to prove herself. As part of the team, Alpha Chi, she honed her skills through focused training and challenging missions, from escorting dignitaries to undertaking dangerous reconnaissance, steadily earning a reputation as an exceptional and reliable Battle Mage. Her dedication earned her a respected place among her peers and the notice of her superiors.

By the time the Recruitment Poster went up, her relentless efforts had earned her a highly coveted recommendation from her section leader, a recognition reserved for only the most exceptional candidates. Out of all who applied, only three Battle Mages were accepted into the Sworn Guards that year. At 26 years old, after years of tireless work and determination, Hannah Farrowlight proudly took her place among them.

Phase Five: Sworn Guard

Returning to her beloved Shrouded Isle as a Sworn Guard was one of the happiest moments of Hannah’s life. Seeing the Stormhead Lighthouse’s beacon piercing the mist brought her a profound sense of belonging. Back among her family, friends, and the familiar streets of Stormhearth, she felt a peace settling deep within her. After years of dedicated and often difficult work, Hannah relaxed.

She threw herself into her duties with enthusiasm, excelling both in her official responsibilities and the civic tasks that connected her to her community. She volunteered for everything she could, from assisting with festivals to organizing patrols, earning respect from both her peers and her neighbors.

In her free time, she visited the lighthouse, rekindling her friendship with Brannon of Lorren, now 71 years old. Brannon, seeing how much Hannah had grown and feeling proud of her hard-earned accomplishments, confided in her that he planned to retire in five years, once she had met the Sworn Guard’s minimum service requirement for the Keeper position, and he promised to recommend her as his successor.

Though she continued to study at the Conservatory and learn from Brannon, the ease she felt being back on her home island allowed her to relax and enjoy her time in a way that she hadn’t since childhood. Brannon often regaled her with tales of his time as Keeper, and he prepared her for the Orals before the Order of the Archives, sharing the obscure questions and challenges she would face. Confident in her plan, Hannah cherished her time on the island, believing her dream was within reach.

Tragedy Strikes

But fate had other plans. On the eve of Brannon’s 75th birthday, he slipped on the lighthouse steps and injured his hip. His recovery was expected to take six months, and Brannon knew he could no longer manage the physically demanding duties of Keeper. At 75, his hip would never recover fully, and he was already struggling, finding it difficult to tend the lighthouse during violent storms or long nights, or even to climb the steps. Reluctantly, he informed the Order of the Archives—and Hannah—of his decision to retire early.

The news devastated Hannah. She had only served four years as a Sworn Guard, one year short of the requirement to apply for the Keeper position. Worse, the Order of the Archives intended to appoint a new Keeper within the month, knowing the lighthouse could not go untended for long. With a new Keeper in place, Hannah’s dream would likely remain out of reach for decades until the position of Keeper opened again.

Overwhelmed by despair, Hannah found herself at the Starfall Plaza outside the Lantern’s Rest Tavern, drowning her sorrows. Her friends tried to console her, and before long, many of the townsfolk had gathered around her. In a small town like Stormhearth, the journey of one was the journey of all. Everyone remembered Hannah as the child enamored with the lighthouse, crafting her ambitious plan. They had been a part of her childhood as she grew up and shared bittersweet farewells when she left for the Arcane Halls in the Horngate. Over the years, her triumphs became cherished stories, celebrated as joyful gossip throughout the town.

Stormhearth’s bonds were woven tightly, a web of mutual love and support, with Hannah nestled securely among them. Here, joy was shared to make life brighter, and burdens were shared to make them lighter. Now, in her moment of despair, the people of Stormhearth gathered around one of their own, offering comfort, solidarity, and the strength of their collective care.

Some drank in solidarity, while others offered words of encouragement. Even Brannon, hobbling on his crutches, joined the crowd. Looking up from her empty tankard with tearful eyes, Hannah apologized to him for feeling sorry for herself when he was the one injured. Brannon simply put his hand on her shoulder and began singing an old Sworn Guards song. One by one, the crowd joined in, their voices rising in harmony.

Hannah’s mother swiftly returned to the family bakery and retrieved a faded piece of paper that had hung on the wall for over a decade. As the last refrain of the song faded, she placed it gently on the table in front of her daughter. The crowd fell silent as Hannah’s teary eyes scanned the page. There, in the squiggly penmanship of an 8-year-old, was Hannah’s Amazing Plan to Become the Most Awesome Keeper Ever.

With a deep breath, she stood, clutching the paper to her chest. “I need help,” she said quietly, her voice raw with emotion. The crowd erupted in cheers and suggestions, rallying around her without hesitation. Hannah had always put her community first, tirelessly serving the Shrouded Isle and its people. Now, in her darkest hour, her neighbors and colleagues, family and friends, stood ready to return her kindness and loyalty. Together, they brainstormed ways to overcome the obstacle, each offering ideas and support.

Hannah’s determination reignited, and with her community at her side, she began crafting a new plan. Guided by Brannon’s wisdom, she prepared to petition the Order of the Archives for an exception. The path ahead was uncertain, but surrounded by those who believed in her, Hannah knew she would, once again, fight for her dream with everything she had.

Exception

Hannah spent the next day with Brannon, carefully penning her petition. The letter outlined her years of preparation, her expertise on the lighthouse, and her unwavering commitment to serving the Shrouded Isle. After a night’s rest, she approached several prominent figures to request their support. Brannon, her Captain, and a few respected business owners eagerly signed the document. However, when word spread that Hannah was gathering signatures, nearly the entire town came forward to lend their names to her cause. By evening, her petition consisted of a single page of heartfelt appeal followed by ten pages of signatures.

Hannah delivered the petition to the office of the Lorewarden that same night. The following day, she received a message summoning her to appear before the Order of the Archives at the Arcane Conservatory the next week. The entire town buzzed with anticipation, and on the appointed day, a large crowd accompanied her to the Conservatory, waiting outside to see if she would be granted the exception. Brannon and her Captain went with her to the meeting room, offering quiet encouragement, but they were asked to remain outside while Hannah faced the Order alone.

Inside, the council of nine sat in a semi-circle, their expressions stern and unreadable. Hannah stood before them, her heart pounding, as they began their questions. For two hours, they interrogated her on every detail of the lighthouse: its history, the lineage of former Keepers, the mechanics of the magical beacon, the storms that battered its walls, the tidal patterns and ship routes, and even the flora that thrived in the lighthouse garden. Though her nerves were frayed, Hannah’s years of preparation paid off: she answered all but four questions correctly, an extraordinary feat.

Finally, they asked her to wait outside. Hannah returned to the steps of the Main Library, where the crowd of townsfolk greeted her with anxious anticipation. With Brannon, her Captain, and her parents by her side, everyone waited to see if she would be granted her exception. After what felt like an eternity, the doors opened, and the council of nine emerged, stepping onto the front steps to face the crowd. The Lorewarden moved to the center and raised her hand for silence.

“With exceptional knowledge, dedication, and service to the Shrouded Isle,” the Lorewarden announced, her voice ringing clear, “it is our honor to not only grant Hannah Farrowlight’s exception, but to name her the new Keeper of the Stormhead Lighthouse.”

The crowd erupted into jubilant cheers! Hannah was swept into a whirlwind of hugs, handshakes, and heartfelt congratulations. The celebration spilled into the Starfall Plaza, where the townsfolk gathered to eat, drink, and toast to their new Keeper. For Hannah, it was the culmination of a lifelong dream and the beginning of her greatest chapter yet.

The Most Awesome Keeper Ever

Hannah Farrowlight, the Most Awesome Keeper Ever, standing proudly in front of the Stormhead Lighthouse.

Hannah Farrowlight’s tenure as Keeper of the Stormhead Lighthouse was nothing short of legendary. Appointed at just 30 years old, she was the youngest Keeper in history, a distinction she wore with pride. Over the next 40 years, she transformed the lighthouse into not just a beacon of safety for incoming ships, but a community hub and a source of pride for the citizens of the Shrouded Isle.

Hannah introduced daily tours of the lighthouse, sharing its magic, history, and legends with visitors and locals alike. Her engaging storytelling and infectious enthusiasm turned the tours into a beloved tradition, attracting travelers from across Starfall Rest.

With her keen sense of stewardship, Hannah also spearheaded efforts to expand the lighthouse gardens and create parkland. She partnered with the Conservatory to cultivate rare and magical flora that thrived in the misty climate, creating a lush haven of beauty and wonder. Working with both Stormhearth and the Conservatory, she established pathways and parks around the Stormhead Lighthouse and the hills overlooking the ocean, creating tranquil spaces for visitors to enjoy its beauty. These additions earned her not only the love of her community but also widespread recognition across Starfall Rest.

The tours and gardens brought more attention to the Shrouded Isle, attracting visitors and sparking more prosperity in Stormhearth. Vendors and artisans came to the growing town, eager to meet the rising demand for goods and services, and Hannah’s vision and efforts were an integral part of that thriving community.

Throughout her tenure, Hannah remained deeply connected to the people of the Shrouded Isle. She often hosted gatherings at the lighthouse, using her position to strengthen the bonds between neighbors and celebrate the island’s unique culture. Her children and grandchildren grew up within the lighthouse’s hallowed walls, carrying forward her legacy of love, dedication, and service.

When she retired at the age of 70, the entire island turned out to honor her. The Conservatory, the Sworn Guards, and even the Order of the Archives presented her with awards and tokens of gratitude. But for Hannah, the greatest reward was having lived the life of a Keeper.

To this day, Hannah Farrowlight is remembered as “The Most Awesome Keeper Ever,” a title bestowed upon her by the people whose lives she touched. Her legacy lives on in every tour given, every flower that blooms in the lighthouse gardens, and every young dreamer who looks up at the Stormhead’s glowing beacon and says, “One day, I’ll be Keeper.”

Moonwinkle’s Meowments

Did you know? The story of Hannah Farrowlight is one of Sylwen’s favorite tales to share. In the quiet of evening, when choosing a book to read to Moonwinkle (as is their tradition), she has, many times, pulled out her treasured copy of The Great Keepers of the Past by Veedon Vondlelight and turned to the well-worn pages dedicated to Hannah. With a cup of warm milk by her side and Moonwinkle curled up by the fire, Sylwen reads the story aloud, her voice filled with admiration. Moonwinkle, of course, pretends not to listen—but she never misses a single word. After all, it’s one of her favorite stories, too.
