Codex Arcana
Within its soaring towers and sprawling courtyards, mages are trained, magical discoveries are made, and arcane missions are planned across the realm. Though its origins lie in scholarship and the pursuit of knowledge, the Arcane Halls have evolved into a complex organization whose influence extends into diplomacy, magical research, investigation, and defense.
Many of the realm’s most skilled spellcasters began their journeys as apprentices beneath the vaulted ceilings of the Arcane Halls.
The Arcane Halls were founded centuries ago as the central academy of the Mages’ Order, serving as both a place of learning and a gathering point for magical scholars across Starfall Rest. Over time the institution grew beyond a simple school, developing into the primary organizational center for the Order’s operations.
For many generations the Arcane Halls housed the greatest magical library in the realm. That era ended during the rise of the Shadow Concord, a secretive faction that sought to suppress magical knowledge. In a devastating attack, the Concord sacked the library of the Arcane Halls, destroying countless irreplaceable texts and artifacts.
The tragedy forced the Mages’ Order to confront the vulnerability of centralized knowledge. In the aftermath, the surviving manuscripts were relocated to the newly founded Arcane Conservatory on the Shrouded Isle, where they could be protected by the island’s natural defenses and the powerful Veilstone.
Although the original manuscripts now reside in the Conservatory, the Arcane Halls remain a major center of magical study. Scholars continue to copy texts from the Conservatory’s archives and produce new research of their own, ensuring that the halls remain one of the most active centers of magical learning in the realm.
The Arcane Halls serve as the operational heart of the Mages’ Order, which fulfills several distinct roles across Starfall Rest.
The halls function as an elite magical university where apprentices train in the theory and practice of spellcraft. Students study subjects such as magical theory, rune languages, enchantment, alchemy, summoning, and elemental manipulation.
Many mages remain within the halls as scholars and researchers, pursuing new discoveries in magical science. Laboratories and research chambers across the complex host experiments ranging from artifact engineering to planar studies.
Journeyman and senior mages frequently accept assignments beyond the Horngate. These missions can include diplomatic mediation, magical investigation, artifact recovery, or assistance to cities and rulers facing supernatural threats.
The Battle Mages serve as the military arm of the Mages’ Order. These elite warrior-mages are trained for dangerous missions where magical combat is required. They are often deployed against magical creatures, rogue constructs, or other threats beyond the reach of conventional forces.
Though these divisions serve different purposes, they are united under the authority of the Mages’ Order and operate from within the Arcane Halls.
Students who wish to join the Mages’ Order must first pass the rigorous entrance examinations required for admission to the Arcane Halls.
Training typically progresses through several ranks:
New students study magical theory and basic spellcraft under the supervision of senior mages.
After passing the Trials of Mastery, an apprentice earns the rank of Journeyman Mage. Journeymen may travel on assignments, conduct supervised research, or specialize in particular magical disciplines.
Experienced mages who have demonstrated exceptional knowledge or service may rise to senior positions within the Order, guiding research or overseeing missions.
Some journeymen also attempt to join the Battle Mages, a path requiring additional physical and tactical training.

The Arcane Halls are divided into four primary districts, each serving a distinct role within the structure of the Mages’ Order. Together they form a sprawling magical campus within the High Spire District of the Horngate.
Though students and mages move freely between most areas, each district maintains its own character, traditions, and responsibilities.

The Collegium Arcanum is the academic heart of the Arcane Halls. This district functions as the magical university where apprentices study the theory and practice of spellcraft.
Towering lecture halls, libraries, laboratories, and dormitories fill the Collegium’s courtyards and spires. Students from across Starfall Rest gather here to learn the fundamentals of magical theory before advancing to more specialized studies.
Dormitories for apprentices and scholars line the towers of the Collegium, creating a vibrant academic community filled with study, debate, magical mishaps, and late-night research.
The Magisterium serves as the governing and administrative center of the Mages’ Order.
Here the senior mages of the Order conduct the business of the guild: reviewing magical research, overseeing the training of apprentices, issuing licenses for magical practice, and advising rulers or civic leaders on arcane matters.
The Magisterium contains:
While the Collegium Arcanum hums with youthful energy, the Magisterium is a place of quiet authority and measured judgment.
The Expeditionary Office coordinates the assignments undertaken by the Mages’ Order across Starfall Rest.
Journeyman and senior mages regularly travel throughout the realm to assist cities, investigate magical phenomena, recover artifacts, or serve as neutral arbiters in disputes involving arcane matters. These missions are organized and dispatched from this district.
Within the Expeditionary Office mages can be found:
Maps, magical charts, and mission records line the walls of its planning chambers. The district also maintains equipment stores and travel preparation halls where mages ready themselves for journeys that may take them far from the Horngate.

The Battle Mage Citadel is the martial stronghold of the Mages’ Order.
Here the elite Battle Mages train in magical combat, tactical coordination, and battlefield spellcraft. Unlike the scholarly atmosphere of the Collegium, the Citadel echoes with the clash of spellfire, the thunder of magical wards, and the disciplined routines of warrior-mages.
The Citadel includes:
• training arenas where combat magic is practiced
• tactical halls used to study past magical conflicts
• barracks for Battle Mage companies
• armories containing enchanted equipment and battle implements
• strategic command rooms used to coordinate deployments
Battle Mages are called upon when magical threats grow too dangerous for ordinary investigation. Whether confronting rogue constructs, dangerous magical creatures, or catastrophic magical events, the Citadel prepares its mages to face the most perilous challenges in the realm.
Though divided into districts, the Arcane Halls function as a single living institution. Apprentices from the Collegium may someday stand in the halls of the Magisterium, take assignments from the Expeditionary Office, or train within the Battle Mage Citadel.
Together these four districts form the beating heart of the Mages’ Order, where knowledge is studied, power is tempered, and magic is shaped into a force that serves the realm of Starfall Rest.
The Silent Archive serves as the primary library of the Arcane Halls and contains one of the largest collections of magical texts outside the Arcane Conservatory.
Though the original manuscripts now reside within the Conservatory, generations of mages have painstakingly copied its works so that students and scholars may continue to study them. New research produced at the Arcane Halls is also submitted to the Conservatory for preservation, while copies remain within the Archive.
The library includes vast reading halls, private study chambers, and scriptoria where apprentice scribes replicate ancient texts.
As its name suggests, strict silence is enforced within the Archive. The robed librarians who oversee the stacks are famous for their intolerance of noise, and students quickly learn that whispering within its halls is rarely forgiven.
The Hall of Trials is where apprentices prove their mastery of spellcraft. Within its magically reinforced chambers, students face a series of tests designed to evaluate their magical knowledge, control, and composure.
Success in these trials marks the transition from apprentice to Journeyman Mage, a milestone celebrated throughout the Arcane Halls.
Perched atop one of the tallest towers of the High Spire District, the Astryx Observatory is devoted to the study of celestial magic.
Here mages track the movement of stars, chart magical currents tied to lunar cycles, and observe celestial events believed to influence spellcraft. The observatory’s massive enchanted lenses allow scholars to study the night sky in extraordinary detail.
The Alchemical Foundry houses the laboratories where mages experiment with magical engineering, enchantment, and artifact creation.
Within its chambers scholars design enchanted tools, develop new spellcraft techniques, and occasionally create constructs of remarkable complexity.
Naturally, not all experiments succeed.
Deep beneath the laboratories lie the heavily warded Containment Vaults.
This subterranean complex stores magical experiments deemed too dangerous, unstable, or poorly understood to destroy safely. Over centuries, the Vaults have accumulated a strange and unsettling collection of magical anomalies.
Students are strictly forbidden from entering the Vaults.
This prohibition has done little to discourage rumors about what lies sealed behind the ancient warded doors.
Though the Mages’ Order does not govern any territory directly, the Arcane Halls wield considerable influence throughout Starfall Rest.
Rulers often seek the Order’s counsel in matters of magical law, dangerous artifacts, or supernatural threats. Journeyman mages regularly travel across the realm on assignments, serving as investigators, scholars, diplomats, and problem-solvers.
At the same time, the halls remain a place of curiosity and discovery, where young spellcasters begin their journeys into the mysteries of magic.
To many citizens of Starfall Rest, the Arcane Halls represent the pinnacle of magical scholarship. Admission to the institution is considered a great honor, and those who earn the title of Journeyman Mage carry a mark of respect recognized across the realm.
Yet beneath the dignity of scholarship lies the vibrant chaos of academic life: rivalries between students, bold magical experiments, and the constant pursuit of knowledge that has defined the Mages’ Order since its founding.
