Codex Arcana
The aethereals are magical, winged beings gifted with powerful light magic. Their skin, hair, and wings shine in a variety of radiant colors, but one trait is universal: all aethereals are female. Though they are capable of bearing children with any of the beings of Starfall Rest, they will only bear aethereal daughters; their children will never take on the traits or gender of the father. For example, the child of a vampyre and an aethereal will never be a vampyre or a male; she will always be an aethereal.
Known for their duality of strength and serenity, the aethereals are as skilled in battle as they are in meditation. They live largely apart from the other beings of Starfall Rest, choosing not to meddle in worldly affairs. However, on rare occasions, they have intervened in times of great need. One such moment was when the aethereals aided the Mages’ Order in creating the Arcane Conservatory and the Order of the Archives after the Arcane Halls were attacked, its librarians slaughtered, and its treasures pillaged.
Though not immortal, the aethereals are long-lived, their years measured in centuries rather than decades. Chrysalla, Starfallen of the Aerie and leader of the aethereals, is said to be over 300 years old, a truth she herself can no longer confirm, having lost track of her years in the mists of time.
The aethereals’ presence is a reminder of balance in a world often divided. Though they seldom intervene, their rare actions shape the course of history, leaving ripples of harmony in their wake.
Nestled high among the peaks of the Stormhorn Mountains, the Aerie is both a sanctuary and stronghold for the aethereals. Carved into the living rock of the mountainside, the Aerie seamlessly blends its architecture with the natural grandeur of the rugged peaks. Its stately doorways and windows, hewn from stone, stand as a testament to the craftsmanship of those who built it centuries ago. In the golden light of sunset, the Aerie’s walls and turrets glow with fiery hues, creating a breathtaking sight for those fortunate enough to behold it.
The Aerie consists of multiple layers, each serving a distinct purpose. While a single, well-guarded path winds through the mountain pass to a fortified gate, this is not the main entrance. The true entrance lies atop the Crown of Lightborne, the tallest peak of the Aerie. Accessible only by flight, the Crown of Lightborne stands as both a symbolic and practical gate, emphasizing the celestial nature of its inhabitants. The Aerie overlooks the shimmering Silverglen, a pristine lake fed by melting snow from the surrounding mountains.
The Aerie is not merely a home: it is the heart of aethereal life and culture. Portions of the structure, known as the Celestial Cradle, serve as places of meditation, ceremony, and governance, presided over by Chrysalla, the Starfallen of the Aerie. Here, the aethereals hone their skills in magic and combat. Among these sacred spaces is the meditation chamber, a quiet sanctuary carved deep into the mountain. With no windows, its mineral-veined walls glow softly in the light of countless candles, creating an atmosphere of serene reflection where aethereals seek clarity, balance, and renewal.
Visitors to the Aerie are closely monitored. Aethereal warriors clad in gleaming golden armor patrol the skies, their long bows and quivers strapped between their massive, luminous wings. These guardians ensure that only those with peaceful intent approach the sanctuary.
The Aerie’s strategic location, high in the Stormhorn Mountains and accessible only to those with wings, ensures its safety from most threats. However, it also represents the aethereals’ deliberate choice to remain apart from the rest of Starfall Rest, an isolation that underscores their role as protectors of balance rather than participants in worldly conflict.

Chrysalla is the eldest of the aethereals, her birth a gossamer thread of light and dreams, fading softly into myth. She is both the spiritual and political leader of the Aethereals, presiding over the Celestial Cradle, the sacred heart of the Aerie. Her wisdom and serenity have guided her people for centuries, and her luminous presence is said to inspire even the most hardened souls.
Only Morath the Undying, the eldest of the black dragons who dwell near the Ebonmere, rivals her in age. He is her most trusted friend and confidante, the one being who understands, as she does, the weight and the lightness of time’s endless flow. Their bond is one of mutual respect and shared understanding, forged through centuries of trials and triumphs.
She is referred to as “Mistress” or “(The) Starfallen.”

Aveline spent the first forty years of her life within the sanctuary of the Aerie, surrounded by the unwavering love of her sisters. Unlike many Aethereals, she was gentle in spirit rather than a warrior of the skies. When Chrysalla the Starfallen invited her to journey beyond the mountains, Aveline discovered a world far larger than she had imagined, and with it, a truth that troubled her deeply.
Though the lands of Starfall Rest were rich with life and love, many people felt alone, even in the company of those who cared for them. She could not understand how love could surround a person and yet remain unseen. It was this realization that led her to Kyra, a grieving young woman who believed she had lost all love. Through kindness, patience, and quiet wisdom, Aveline helped her see that love is not only found in romance, but in family, in friendships, and in the simple joys of life. From that moment, Heartspring was born.
Now known as the Aethereal of Love and Vulnerability, Aveline is a beloved presence in Heartspring celebrations across the realm. Her presence is considered a blessing, and many seek her gentle wisdom in matters of the heart. She teaches that to love—whether it be another, oneself, or the world—is to be open, unguarded, and unafraid.

The vampyre Belgrave longed for a son to share in the leadership of the Thieves’ Guild. When he fell in love with Silverwind, an aethereal, he never imagined the children she bore would not be sons but daughters for aethereals can only bear female offspring. Their union resulted in twins, a rare and miraculous occurrence.
The first child, Adelina, was strong and healthy, destined to follow the path of their mother’s kind. The second, frail and thin, was thought unlikely to survive her first year. The midwife advised against naming her, believing it unwise to attach hope to such a fragile life. But the child’s will was unrelenting, stronger even than death, and at the age of five, her parents gave her a name: Eirwen, the light of the snow and the strength of the wind.
When the twins came of age, Adelina chose to return to the Aerie with their mother to begin her training in light magic. Eirwen, however, did not share her sister’s aptitude for magic. Yet, the Light did not abandon her. It granted her a unique gift: the ability to discern truth from lies. This skill, rare and powerful, became her greatest weapon in the shadowy world of the Thieves’ Guild. Eirwen defied tradition and chose to remain by her father’s side.
Now, Eirwen stands as co-leader of the Guild alongside Belgrave. Her uncanny ability to perceive honesty has earned her an unshakable reputation, ensuring no one dares to lie to her or her father. Ironically, this has made the Thieves’ Guild one of the most honest organizations in all of Starfall Rest. Eirwen’s dual heritage grants her both the grace and wisdom of the aethereals and the cunning and resilience of the vampyres. Both the vampyres and aethereals see her as a living bridge between two vastly different worlds… and some seek to exploit that fact.

Adelina, daughter of the vampyre Belgrave and the aethereal Silverwind, is the twin sister of Eirwen. From a young age, Adelina showed remarkable talent for magic, her abilities shining brightly even among the gifted aethereals. Her mother believed Adelina’s strength in light magic would make her a prodigy, a beacon of hope for their kind.
Upon her return to the Aerie, however, Adelina’s journey took an unexpected turn. Though her light magic was indeed powerful, she struggled to suppress the shadow self inherited from her vampyric lineage. In her efforts to please her mother, she allowed only her light self to flourish, casting the darker aspects of her being into the shadows of her mind.
The Starfallen of the Aerie, seeing her inner turmoil, declared that the Aerie could not guide Adelina’s path. Instead, they urged her to seek the Wyrdkin, the witches of the forests, who embrace the spiral magic of shadow and light, working within nature’s eternal cycle of balance.
Adelina’s story is one of self-discovery and balance. Known as “the Nightblessed,” she walks the path of both shadow and light, embracing her duality as she learns to wield the entirety of her power. Though no longer at the Aerie, Adelina’s name remains spoken with reverence, a reminder of the complexity of their world and the necessity of balance.

The Aerie, nestled high among the peaks of the Stormhorn Mountains, offers a sanctuary for all aethereals, regardless of their lineage. It is a promise of safety, a haven where sisters of the light may find peace. For Crystalsong, this promise became her salvation.
Stolen by the Grimwraith as a child and sold to Sir Darius, she was betrothed to the royal line of the Stygian Reach in exchange for land and a title. Her life was bartered away before she could even understand its worth. At thirteen, her governess, a woman who had come to love her like a daughter, helped her escape. With one wing broken and her heart filled with faint hope, Crystalsong fled by night, hiding by day, and surviving on scraps of stolen food.
Her journey might have ended in despair if not for the aid of Iris and Lord Darkwood. Together, they guided her through the harrowing final leg of her journey to the Aerie. There, she was welcomed with open arms, her broken body and spirit slowly healed under the care of her aethereal sisters.
Now grown and whole, Crystalsong soars under the protection of the Aerie, her radiant wings a symbol of the freedom she fought so hard to reclaim. Though her past still haunts her dreams, her resilience inspires others, and her story stands as a reminder of the Aerie’s role as a sanctuary for all aethereals who seek refuge.

Born to a wolven shaman father and an aethereal mother, Seraphiel’s destiny was as unique as her heritage. Her parents believed she would never take the form of a wolf like her wolven brethren, for daughters of aethereals are bound to the Aerie from the moment of their conception. Yet, Seraphiel’s father, recognizing her connection to her clan, trained her to follow in his footsteps as shamaness, bridging her aethereal light with the ancient traditions of the Wolven.
On the night of her 18th birthday, under the light of the full moon, Seraphiel’s fate shifted in an unexpected and miraculous way. Collapsing under the moonlight, her body twisted and morphed… not into a wolf, but into a unicorn as white as freshly fallen snow atop the Eaglecrest Horn. The transformation surprised and delighted her clan. Now, as both shamaness and shape-shifter, she runs with her kin, working and playing as one with the pack-bond.
Seraphiel’s mastery of light magic and her rare ability to transform into a unicorn make her a beacon of guidance and hope among the Northernmost Clan of Wolven. She embodies the unity of light and the wild. Her presence bridges the divide between the mystical and the primal, offering wisdom and healing to those who seek her counsel.
Nestled within the same Stormhorn Mountains as the Aerie, the Dragons of Ebonhorn are the Aethereals’ closest neighbors and most enduring allies. Over centuries of shared existence, their relationship has grown into a natural and unspoken alliance. Though the Dragons and Aethereals rarely meddle in each other’s affairs, they share a deep mutual respect and an understanding of each other.
When either faction faces a grave threat, the other is always quick to answer the call for aid. This bond has been tested and proven countless times, from defending their shared mountain range against external forces to offering refuge and support in times of strife. Together, the Aethereals and the Dragons of Ebonhorn stand as guardians of the Stormhorn Mountains, united by a quiet but unbreakable pact.
Did you know? The daemon imps that now call the underground archives of the Arcane Conservatory their home originally came from the Stormhorn Mountains and the Aerie! When the aethereals, along with the mages, collaborated to build the Arcane Conservatory, they enlisted the help of these mischievous creatures. Daemon imps, at home in the deep dark places of the earth, are exceptionally skilled at carving and crafting living spaces out of stone.
When construction was complete, many imps decided to stay, having grown fond of the tunnels and chambers they had so artfully and lovingly shaped. Over the years, their colony has flourished deep beneath the Conservatory, much to the Librarians’ enduring chagrin. Navigating around their impish antics has become an art form in itself, though some say Sylwen’s companion, Moonwinkle, seems to delight in their mischief… and perhaps even participates at times!
