The Keeper of the Stormhead Lighthouse

The Keeper of the Stormhead Lighthouse is a highly esteemed role on the Shrouded Isle, entrusted to a select member of the Sworn Guards. This position combines practical duties, ceremonial traditions, and a deep connection to the history and magic of the Stormhead Lighthouse.

The Keeper

The Keeper of the Stormhead Lighthouse holds one of the most honored positions on the Shrouded Isle. Entrusted with maintaining the magical beacon that guides ships through the island’s ever-present mist, the Keeper serves as both guardian and storyteller, embodying the lighthouse’s role as a symbol of safety and unity.

The position is open only to those who have served with distinction in the Sworn Guards, and it is coveted not only for its prestige but also for the opportunity to reside in the cozy lighthouse keeper’s house, nestled against the base of the lighthouse. With its warm hearth, enchanting views of the sea, and close ties to island life, the house is as cherished as the role itself.

Selection and Residency

To become the Keeper, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Service Requirement: Applicants must have served with the Sworn Guards for a minimum of five years.
  • Selection Process: The selection process is rigorous, involving both an evaluation of service record and an interview with the Order of the Archives. Only those who embody the ideals of loyalty, vigilance, and stewardship are considered.

Upon selection, the Keeper and their family (if applicable) move into the lighthouse keeper’s house, a dwelling filled with warmth, history, and a strong connection to the Stormhead Lighthouse’s mission.

Duties of the Keeper

While the Keeper’s primary responsibility is maintaining the lighthouse’s magical beacon, their role extends beyond simple maintenance. Their duties include:

  • Maintaining the Magical Beacon: Ensuring the light operates flawlessly to guide ships safely through the mist and turbulent waters.
  • Island Watch: Monitoring for incoming ships and potential threats to the island.
  • Guided Tours: Hosting daily tours of the lighthouse (except on holidays and weekends), sharing its history, lore, and the magic behind its operation.
  • Home Day Ceremonial Fire: Lighting the ceremonial fire during the annual Home Day festival, a tradition steeped in community pride.
  • Storm Chronicles: Maintaining a journal known as the Storm Chronicles, where they document significant events, weather patterns, and unusual magical occurrences.

Famous Keepers

Captain Lysander Greaves

Captain Lysander Greaves, the stalwart first Keeper of the Stormhead Lighthouse, pictured during his lifetime in his study, diligently chronicling his duties in the Storm Chronicles. Even in death, The Captain remains devoted to his post, ensuring the lighthouse and its legacy are maintained to his exacting standards.

Captain Lysander Greaves was the very first Keeper of the Stormhead Lighthouse, and his presence—both in life and after—has left an indelible mark on the Shrouded Isle. A retired captain of the Sworn Guards with a reputation for meticulousness and unwavering discipline, Greaves was entrusted with overseeing the newly constructed lighthouse and establishing the protocols that Keepers still follow to this day.

Greaves took his duties seriously, dedicating himself to documenting every storm, ship arrival, and magical anomaly in the Storm Chronicles, a record still maintained by each Keeper who has followed in his footsteps. His tireless commitment to the lighthouse was matched only by his stubborn personality. He was known to frequently advise—or, more accurately, lecture—his colleagues and the townsfolk on “proper” lighthouse maintenance, gardening techniques, and even tea preparation.

After his passing, it seems Captain Greaves’ spirit could not bear to leave his post. Now known as The Captain, his ghostly form continues to haunt the Stormhead Lighthouse, roaming the balcony, garden, and kitchen. While some find his spectral presence unnerving, most Keepers consider him harmless—albeit occasionally opinionated. Legends say he has scared off more than a few curious intruders with his disapproving glare.

Despite his stubbornness, The Captain’s dedication to the lighthouse is undeniable. Many Keepers quietly appreciate his watchful eye, even if it comes with unsolicited advice. His story, immortalized in the Storm Chronicles, reminds every Keeper of the importance of vigilance, community, and a good cup of tea.

Hannah Farrowlight

Hannah Farrowlight, the youngest—and most celebrated—Keeper of the Stormhead Lighthouse.

Born and raised in the town of Stormhearth, Hannah Farrowlight grew up in a bustling bakery owned by her parents. From a young age, Hannah dreamed of becoming Keeper of the Stormhead Lighthouse—a position traditionally reserved for mages or aethereals. Undeterred, she crafted her Amazing Plan to Become the Most Awesome Keeper Ever, a childhood blueprint that fueled her ambition. Through years of hard work and relentless determination, she realized her dream, becoming the youngest Keeper in history at just 30 years old.

Under Hannah’s stewardship, the Stormhead Lighthouse became more than a beacon for sailors; it became a cherished symbol of community. She introduced daily tours to share her love of the lighthouse’s history and magic, drawing visitors from across Starfall Rest. Seeing the growing number of visitors, she partnered with The Arcane Conservatory and Stormhearth to expand the gardens and develop scenic parks and walking paths around the lighthouse, turning the surrounding area into a destination in its own right.

Hannah served as Keeper for 40 years, raising her children and grandchildren in the lighthouse and leaving an indelible mark on the Shrouded Isle. To this day, she is remembered as Most Awesome Keeper Ever: a steadfast guardian and a visionary whose love for the lighthouse and the Shrouded Isle left a legacy of community and faithful stewardship.

Arlen “Jumpin’ Jack” Cormack

A quirky Keeper famous for his unique habit of climbing the lighthouse’s exterior rather than using the stairs—earning him both a reputation for daring and the occasional scolding from the Order of the Archives.

Unique Tour Highlights

The Captain

The Captain, ghostly guardian of the Stormhead Lighthouse, still watches over the island from his post atop the balcony. Though his presence may send a chill down your spine, the Keepers insist he means no harm… even if some, like Arlen Cormack, preferred to steer clear of him entirely.

The ghost of Captain Lysander Greaves, now affectionately known as the Captain, can often be seen at the top of the lighthouse late at night, ever vigilant in his duty to safeguard the island. Some say he also lingers in the lighthouse garden, admiring the flowers, or in the kitchen, where he appears to be waiting for his afternoon tea—a tradition he famously upheld during his lifetime.

While his spectral presence has inspired many eerie tales, the Keepers insist that the Captain is entirely harmless—though Arlen Cormack might disagree. Known for his fear of ghosts, Cormack once confessed that his habit of climbing the lighthouse’s exterior rather than using the stairs might have had more to do with avoiding an awkward encounter with Captain Greaves than with any daring love of heights.

The Bells of Night

An enchanting artifact housed in the lighthouse, the Bells of Night produce soft, melodic chimes when touched by moonlight. When the Witches of the Citadel gifted the Arcane Conservatory the grand magical bells for the Luminal Clock Tower, they brought a matching, smaller set to hang in the Stormhead Lighthouse. These delicate bells, imbued with similar magic, remain dormant during the day, their hauntingly beautiful tones revealed only under the light of the moon.

Since the chimes are most often heard by the Keeper and their family or friends during quiet moonlit evenings, they have become a rare delight for visitors. Tour members frequently lament missing the bells in action, but their rarity only adds to their allure—and the Keeper’s stories of the Bells’ music are enough to enchant even the most disappointed guests.

The Whispering Spiral

Visitors climbing the spiral staircase of the lighthouse often report hearing faint, ethereal whispers. While some dismiss these as tricks of the wind or the creaks of old wood, legend holds that the whispers are the voice of the lighthouse itself, recounting the stories of past Keepers and the storms they’ve weathered.

The whispers are said to grow louder during particularly stormy nights. Some Keepers claim that listening closely can reveal forgotten secrets or warnings about incoming weather, though others believe the whispers are simply an echo of the lighthouse’s long and storied past.

The origin of the Whispering Spiral remains a mystery. Some scholars speculate that the magic of the Bells of Night may resonate through the tower, while others argue that the lighthouse, imbued with centuries of magical protection, has developed a will and voice of its own. Whatever the truth, the whispers have become a beloved and eerie feature of the Stormhead Lighthouse.

Moonwinkle’s Meowments

Did you know? Moonwinkle once spent an entire month “assisting” the Keeper of the Stormhead Lighthouse. When Sylwen left the Shrouded Isle to attend a conference at The Arcane Halls in The Horngate, Moonwinkle decided to make the lighthouse her temporary domain.

Though initially vexed when Moonwinkle knocked over her inkpots in the study, Bella Crystal, the aethereal Keeper, soon found Moonwinkle to be a surprisingly charming companion. Moonwinkle enjoyed lounging on the lighthouse balcony or staring down the ghost of Captain Greaves in the kitchen with her signature unflappable calm, sending the ghost away grumbling about cats and tea.

Every evening, Moonwinkle accompanied Bella to the balcony. The two would sit quietly together, watching the sun set over the ocean in serene companionship. They then would return to the kitchen, where Bella would prepare a cup of tea for herself and a small portion of fish for Moonwinkle—a routine that quickly became their shared ritual.

When Sylwen returned, Bella offered to catsit Moonwinkle anytime Sylwen needed to leave the island. To this day, a small plaque lovingly handcrafted by Bella remains at the base of the lighthouse, commemorating Moonwinkle as an “Honorary Keeper.”
