Codex Arcana
A Living Staff is crafted from the branch of an enchanted tree, chosen for its profound connection to the natural world. The living branch is never cut but willingly given by the tree, retaining its vitality and continuing to grow leaves and roots over time. The staff’s living essence resonates with its bonded witch’s magical energy, creating a deeply symbiotic relationship.
The origin of the Living Staff lies deep in the Faedarke, with Clan Faedarke O’Wyrdkin and their unique bond to Heart’s Dawn, the world tree that anchors the forest. Centuries ago, as the Wyrdkin settled in the Faedarke, they discovered the tree’s wisdom and began to forge a profound connection with it. Guided by Heart’s Dawn, the witches of Clan Faedarke unlocked the secret to crafting Living Staves—branches voluntarily given by enchanted trees, imbued with life and magic.
While the art of creating Living Staves began in Faedarke, it has since spread to other clans of the Wyrdkin. Today, witches from across Starfall Rest often make pilgrimages to Faedarke to study under its master crafters, learning the delicate balance required to bond with an enchanted tree and receive its living gift. These witches return to their own forests, adapting the craft to the unique flora and magic of their homeland.
Despite its spread, Clan Faedarke remains the heart of this sacred tradition. Their close relationship with Heart’s Dawn and their centuries of expertise make them unparalleled teachers. They continue to guide the evolution of the Living Staff, ensuring this symbiotic magic thrives within the Wyrdkin and serves as a living testament to their philosophy of harmony and balance with nature.

The primary power of a Living Staff lies in its ability to connect the witch to the living root system and life force of the forest. When set upon the soil, the staff’s roots burrow deep, linking the witch to the intricate network of roots and energies that flow through the land. This connection allows witches to track disturbances, summon the forest’s aid, or draw upon its strength to heal or defend.
A Living Staff is most powerful when it connects to the root system of its mother forest, where the bond between staff and land is strongest. Though it can link to the root systems of other forests, its abilities are diminished, as the foreign land lacks the deep harmony cultivated over years of growth alongside the staff’s tree of origin. For this reason, when working with a specific forest, covens often call upon Wyrdkin witches whose staves are children of that forest, ensuring the strongest possible connection to the land.
Beyond this unique connection, Living Staves are powerful tools for weaving nature magic. Witches can blend their living energy with the staff’s to:
A Living Staff is not merely a tool of magic—it is a bridge to the natural world, amplifying the witch’s ability to harmonize with the living forces that unify the forest.
The creation of a Living Staff requires deep trust between the witch and the enchanted tree. The Wyrdkin, with their unparalleled connection to nature, are the most adept at this art. Living primarily in forests, the Wyrdkin’s proximity to their world trees—such as Heart’s Dawn, the young world tree of the Faedarke—has further enhanced their craft, allowing them to create some of the most powerful Living Staves in Starfall Rest.
This process is neither quick nor simple. Nurturing the tree from which the staff is grown can take years, even decades, as the bond between the witch and the tree deepens. A Living Staff is not merely a magical artifact but a symbol of harmony, patience, and devotion.
The Wyrdkin’s mastery of Living Staves reflects their role as fierce protectors of their forests. Wielding these magical tools, they guard their sacred lands against intruders and corruption. On rare occasions, the Wyrdkin have even allied with Battle Mages to repel powerful foes threatening the balance of the Faedarke or other enchanted forests.
These alliances, though uncommon, underscore the Living Staff’s unique significance—not just as a magical artifact but as a weapon of defense and restoration.
A Living Staff, offered as a living gift from a bonded tree, is inextricably tied to a single witch and cannot be passed to another. When a bonded witch dies, the Living Staff faces a profound choice:
When a staff is planted, the coven gathers for a solemn ceremony, honoring the bond between the staff and its witch. They plant the staff in the earth with care and devotion, remaining with it until the staff either takes root or refuses the soil. If it takes root, the Wyrdkin care for the young tree, often visiting it in the weeks and months after its planting to offer solace. The tree is said to mourn the loss of its witch, its growth slow and sorrowful at first, but with time, it begins to flourish, creating a new legacy within the forest. The trees grown from Living Staves are said to possess an even greater power than their origin tree, becoming places of wisdom and sanctuary for future generations.
Should a staff choose not to take root, it is buried alongside its bonded witch, laid to rest alongside its life partner.

Tree of Origin: Verdelune, a willow tree in Willowmere, near Whisperun in the Faedarke
Bonded Witch: Kaelith Verdane, Clan Faedarke O’Wyrdkin
One of the most renowned Living Staves is Verdia, wielded by Kaelith Verdane, a Wyrdkin witch from Whisperun. Born from Kaelith’s deep bond with the willow Verdelune, Verdia stands as a testament to the harmony between witch and nature. Crafted under Verdelune’s guidance, this Living Staff is not only a powerful tool for healing and protection but also played a pivotal role in defeating a Nighthaunt that invaded the Faedarke—a harrowing event now remembered as the Festering.
Did you know? Moonwinkle once attempted to borrow Kaelith’s Living Staff, Verdia, for a grand nap atop Verdelune’s sun-dappled branches. When Verdia politely declined, Moonwinkle huffed, declared it “a rather stuck-up stick,” and flounced off to a nearby patch of soft moss—where she promptly fell asleep for hours. Verdia, being a rather elegant and understanding staff, took no offense, merely feeling amused by the feline’s dramatic pout.
