Codex Arcana
Magical kittens are born with solid black eyes, like twin voids that hold the night sky within. As they grow, bond, and discover their magical path, their eyes gradually transform, glowing in hues that reflect their powers and life experiences.
The fur of magical cats may shift in the moonlight, revealing hidden patterns or runes that glow softly when magic is cast. These markings often seem alive, adding to their air of mystery.

Magical cats defy the control of mortals, especially when it comes to reproduction. Humans cannot breed them—any attempt to do so will fail, leaving nothing but frustration and, often, angry scratches.
A magical cat decides entirely if and when to mate. Many live fulfilling lives without ever bearing kittens, while others may choose partners of either magical or ordinary lineage. The outcome of such unions is unpredictable and always dictated by the will of the magical cat:
Magical cats are known for their playful pranks, such as hiding herb pouches or vanishing spoons. However, they are fiercely loyal to their bonded companions, offering protection and guidance in times of need. Their mischief, while rarely malicious, is far from ordinary. Whereas a nonmagical cat might knock a cup off a table, a magical cat might teleport that cup into the neighbor’s cupboard, purely to relish the ensuing chaos.

A magical cat always chooses its companion. If deemed worthy, a human may find themselves unexpectedly followed home or awaking to find a glowing-eyed feline curled beside them—a sign of a lifelong partnership. These cats bring both blessings and delightful chaos, their presence marking a bond that is as mysterious as it is profound.
Among the witches of Starfall Rest—the Sisters Ardent, Wyrdkin, solitaries, and all witches in between—magical cats are one of the most preferred and common Familiars. Their serene demeanor helps ground a witch’s energy, allowing her to channel her magic with greater clarity and focus. During rituals, the presence of a magical cat is considered a blessing and a sign of harmony, while their approval (or lack thereof) is often viewed as an unspoken critique of the witch’s work.
The Wyrdkin often joke: “If your familiar looks at you with disdain, you’re casting your spell wrong.”

Moonwinkle has bewitched her way into the hearts of Starfall Rest’s inhabitants, both mortal and magical. With glowing aqua eyes that reflect her curious nature, Moonwinkle is more than just Sylwen’s companion; she’s a legend in her own right.
Brought to the Conservatory as a kitten to handle the daemon imps in the Underground Archives, Moonwinkle defied expectations by befriending the imps instead of scaring them away. Now, she’s the only creature ever invited into their secret village, where she dines on enchanted biscuits and returns with glowing mushrooms in her fur. Her unique bond with the imps has even opened a dialogue between them and the Luminal Librarians, much to Sylwen’s delight.
But Moonwinkle’s adventures don’t stop at the Conservatory. She’s traveled the length and breadth of Starfall Rest, leaving a trail of mischief and fond memories wherever she goes. From enchanting the grizzled thieves of the Thieves’ Guild in Darkenfell to basking in the dappled sunlight of Verdelune, the great willow of Willowmere in the Faedarke, Moonwinkle has left a bit of her magical sparkle (and a little sass) wherever she has visited.
When asked to define the powers of her magical companion, Sylwen simply replies with a wry smile, “Charm and chaos.”
Moonwinkle’s antics are as legendary as her loyalty. Whether she’s bringing laughter to the Thieves’ Guild or bridging the gap between the living and the magical, Moonwinkle proves that sometimes, the smallest paws leave the biggest imprints on the world.
