Codex Arcana
The Sisters Ardent trace their origins to the earliest witches of Starfall Rest: hedge witches, kitchen witches, and healers who served their communities with quiet devotion. For centuries, they practiced their craft alone or in small covens, guided by the gentle whispers of the Moon Goddess. Over time, these witches began to gather, forming unions to share knowledge, protect one another, and amplify their magic.
It was through these gatherings that a pattern emerged: children born with silver-white hair displayed an extraordinary connection to the Moon Goddess and the natural world. These witches, revered as the Witch Queens, could hear the Goddess’s voice with unmatched clarity, alongside the songs of the wind, the trees, and the stars. Their power was undeniable, and over time, they became known collectively as the Luminous Choir, priestesses chosen by the Moon Goddess herself.
The Moon Citadel, also known as the White Citadel, was built nearly a thousand years ago, a place of learning and sanctuary where witches from across Starfall Rest could train under the guidance of the Sisters. What began as a community effort to nurture young witches gradually solidified into a structured order. Today, the Sisters Ardent are the most powerful faction of witches in Starfall Rest, their practices honed and their traditions steeped in ritual.

The Moon Citadel rises above the Endless Deep, overlooking the rugged Thunderholme Fjords where the Sylvercurrent meets the sea. Its alabaster walls shine like a beacon of tranquility, defying the stormy skies and restless waves. It serves as both a temple and a school. Young witches who show potential often journey to the Citadel to train, learning not only magic but also healing, herbcraft, and diplomacy. After completing their training, witches can choose to remain at the Citadel, accept assignments as emissaries or healers, or return to their communities as trained practitioners.
The moon priestesses of the Luminous Choir, however, are born into their role. Chosen by the Moon Goddess at birth, they spend their lives in service to her will, leading rituals, guiding the Sisters, and acting as her voice on earth.
Though the Sisters Ardent are devoted to order and balance, not all witches align with their practices, believing their sacred connection to magic has ossified into dogma. These dissenters often seek out the Wyrdkin, a sect of witches that embraces the balance of light and shadow, and rejects the Citadel’s growing rigidity.
The Sisters Ardent embrace the tradition of bonding with magical Familiars, though their connections often reflect their coastal environment and devotion to the divine. While magical cats remain a beloved choice, their grace and wisdom aligning perfectly with the Sisters’ ideals, the proximity to the sea has led to extraordinary bonds with oceanic creatures. There are tales of Sisters forming connections with luminescent octopi, lively otters, and even grand and mystical beings like whales.
Sister Mariselle and her bonded familiar, Aquella, are well-known figures among the Sisters Ardent. Aquella, a playful narwhal with a shimmering silver tusk, is often seen alongside Mariselle in the coastal waters near the Moon Citadel. Their bond is not only a source of fascination but also a vital part of the Sisterhood’s mission. Together, they have been credited with calming storms and guiding lost ships safely to shore, their connection a living testament to divine connection the Sisters Ardent strive to uphold.
The Sisters Ardent hold sacred the flowing feminine magic of the moon and the water, believing it is their duty to guide Starfall Rest in harmony with the Moon Goddess’s will. Their power and influence are immense, but so too is their fear: fear of chaos, fear of untamed magic, and fear of the past. It was this fear that led to the creation of laws forbidding witches from bearing children with dragons, a response to the devastation wrought by a powerful child of such a union centuries ago.
This fear, however, has also bred discord. As the Citadel’s rules have grown stricter, some witches have begun to chafe under its weight. These tensions reached a breaking point when a group of witches splintered from the Sisters, forming the Wyrdkin, a secretive and rebellious faction that the Sisters alternately regard as either insignificant or dangerously heretical, depending on the whims of the Reverend Mother in charge of the Citadel at the time.

The current leader of the Sisters Ardent, the Reverend Mother, is a woman of unyielding conviction and dogmatic rigor. Her severe nature and steadfast adherence to the Citadel’s rules make her a polarizing figure among witches. While she is not unreasonable, persuading her to shift her position requires exceptional effort, diplomacy, and careful negotiation, a task many find daunting, if not impossible.
Did you know? During Sylwen’s first visit to the Moon Citadel with Moonwinkle, the Sisters Ardent proclaimed the glowing-eyed feline an ascended magical cat, a sacred familiar destined for only the strongest witches. Sylwen, caught off guard by the reverence shown to her mischievous companion, spent an exhausting week politely explaining that she was, indeed, a librarian and not a witch, and had no intention of leaving the Arcane Conservatory to study at the Citadel. “I’m quite happy as a librarian, thank you,” she repeated, more times than she cared to count.
Despite her wish to avoid future misunderstandings, Sylwen brought Moonwinkle along on subsequent visits to the Citadel. The deciding factor? Moonwinkle’s blossoming friendship with Aquella, the Citadel’s resident narwhal familiar. Though adverse to water, Moonwinkle braved the salty brine to perch on the rocks near the wharf, where her marine friend danced and chirped in the moonlit bay. What the two magical companions discussed, Sylwen had no idea, but the sight of them together was too heartwarming to deny, even if it meant enduring a few more overzealous Sisters mistaking her for a closet witch and Moonwinkle for a divine emissary.
To this day, Sylwen can’t help but chuckle whenever she sees Moonwinkle basking in her admirers’ attention. After all, the little mischief-maker seems to enjoy every moment of her exalted status at the Citadel.
