The Wyrdmeet at Barrowold

Every autumn, when the veil between worlds grows thin, the Wyrdkin of Starfall Rest gather at the Barrowold, a vast and ancient graveyard nestled in the northern Wildenwood, near the foothills of the Stormhorn Mountains. This sacred event, known as the Wyrdmeet, is a weeklong celebration blending solemn rituals, joyous revelry, and deep tradition. For the Wyrdkin, it is more than a gathering—it is a reaffirmation of their unity, purpose, and bond.

Location

The Enchanted Barrowold

The Barrowold is an ancient resting place for Wyrdkin ancestors, shrouded in mist that clings to its moss-covered barrows and towering evergreens. Two powerful ley lines cross here, creating an otherworldly energy that enhances the Wyrdkin’s ability to commune with the dead. Some say the trees whisper the voices of those who have passed, and it is not uncommon to glimpse ghostly figures wandering among the barrows.

For the Wyrdkin, these phenomena are not sources of fear but of reverence. The Barrowold is a sacred reminder that death is simply another turn of the eternal spiral. Here, among the ancient barrows and whispering trees, the Wyrdkin find both guidance and a deep sense of belonging.

Host Clan Wildenwood

The Wyrdmeet is hosted each year by Clan Wildenwood O’Wyrdkin, as its sacred location, the Barrowold, lies within their forest. The witches of Clan Wildenwood oversee all aspects of the event: preparing the Barrowold for rituals, arranging feasts, and maintaining the delicate balance between jubilant celebration and environmental stewardship. Their deep connection to the Barrowold and its ley lines makes them ideal hosts, ensuring the Wyrdmeet honors its sacred purpose while preserving the ecosystem.

Beyond logistics, Clan Wildenwood takes pride in crafting an atmosphere that embodies the Wyrdkin’s values of balance and connection. From the soft glow of lanterns illuminating the barrows to the spiral dances that resonate with the forest’s ancient energy, their efforts transform the Barrowold into a living, breathing testament to Wyrdkin unity.

Coordinating Travel

Reaching the Barrowold is a journey in itself, often undertaken by Wyrdkin from distant clans who travel in groups along ancient paths. To guide these journeys, permanent waystations were established throughout the Wildenwood. Originally constructed as temporary shelters, the waystations grew in number and significance as the Wyrdmeet expanded. Now, they stand as enduring landmarks, each blending into the forest with their moss-covered roofs and carved wooden spirals.

The waystations are not manned year-round but come alive in the week leading up to the Wyrdmeet, as Clan Wildenwood witches stock them with food, water, and essential supplies for travelers. For many witches, the journey itself becomes a spiritual pilgrimage, and the waystations offer a chance to rest, reflect, and prepare for the sacred gathering. Outside of the Wyrdmeet season, the waystations still serve as quiet sanctuaries, guiding witches who wish to make their own pilgrimage to the Barrowold to honor their ancestors.

Economic Impact and Preparation

The Wyrdmeet is not just a sacred gathering; it’s also a massive logistical undertaking that ripples through the surrounding regions.

Economic Impact

The weeks leading up to the Wyrdmeet transform Ravenstone Fields and Darkenfell into bustling trade hubs. Local brewers, vintners, and farmers experience a surge in demand as Clan Wildenwood O’Wyrdkin places extensive orders for beer, wine, fresh produce, and specialty provisions. The influx of business energizes the region’s economy, with many vendors relying on this seasonal boost.

Artisans and merchants also benefit, as the Wyrdkin are eager to barter for unique wares during the event. Magical charms, ceremonial garb, and handcrafted tools often exchange hands at market stalls set up near the Barrowold. Despite the occasional ghostly encounter, merchants eagerly return year after year, drawn by the promise of profitable sales and the enchantment of the Wyrdmeet.

Logistical Preparations

Hosting over 300 Wyrdkin requires careful planning, and over the centuries, the Wyrdmeet has transformed into an organized and enduring tradition. While the event began with temporary setups, the Wyrdkin, led by Clan Wildenwood, eventually constructed permanent buildings near the Barrowold to better accommodate the gathering. These structures, made of stone and wood, blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. During most of the year, the building are used sparsely, but the whole site comes alive during October, the month of Wyrdmeet.

Preparing the Grounds

The first day of the Wyrdmeet is dedicated to maintaining the grounds and ensuring everything is in place for the week’s events. Witches gather to repair or expand the buildings, clear pathways, and prepare communal areas like the Spiral Glade and market grounds. This day also serves as a time to address Wyrdmeet-specific business.

Accommodations

Under the glow of a full moon, Rowenna of Whisperun and her familiar, Shadowwhisker, find peace in autumn’s cozy embrace. Wrapped in a warm blanket, she embraces the magic of the open sky and the Barrowold’s timeless serenity.

Despite the permanent structures, each witch is responsible for their own shelter during the Wyrdmeet. Some bring elaborately decorated tents, while others prefer to sleep under the stars, embracing the open sky and the magic of the Barrowold. Clan Wildenwood provides guidance and assistance for those traveling long distances to ensure everyone is comfortable and safe.

The Permanent Buildings

The buildings serve specific purposes:

  • The Hall of Feasts: A large communal dining hall where meals are prepared and shared.
  • The Spirit’s Hearth: A sacred space for rituals and communing with ancestors, filled with spiral carvings and glowing glyphs.
  • The Market Pavilion: A covered area for artisans and merchants to set up their stalls, protected from the elements but open to the forest’s magic.
  • The Council Chamber: A circular stone building where clan leaders meet to discuss matters of importance and hold the Wyrdmeet’s sacred council.

These structures, cared for with reverence, symbolize the Wyrdkin’s commitment to balance, community, and tradition.

The Wyrdmeet Market

While the Wyrdmeet is primarily a sacred gathering for the Wyrdkin, it also hosts a vibrant market that attracts artisans and merchants from across Starfall Rest. Drawn by the promise of rare goods and the chance to barter with witches, many vendors prepare all year for the opportunity to sell their wares at this one-of-a-kind event.

Despite their excitement, the merchants tread carefully. The Barrowold’s magical energy is palpable, and more than one vendor has found themselves face-to-face with a Wyrdkin ancestral ghost while setting up their stall. While these encounters are rarely threatening, the experience is often unsettling, with spirits occasionally inspecting the goods or offering cryptic advice.

Even so, the market’s rewards far outweigh its risks. Wyrdkin value craftsmanship and rarity, making them eager buyers of unique wares such as enchanted tools, ceremonial garb, and spellcraft components. In turn, the Wyrdkin trade handcrafted charms, magical staves, and potions, making the market an irresistible draw for vendors willing to brave the ancestral mists.

To ease tensions, Clan Wildenwood witches cast subtle protective wards over the market to keep the atmosphere festive and welcoming, ensuring that even the most nervous merchant leaves with tales of the Wyrdmeet’s wonders—and profits.

The One Clan

As dawn rises over the mists of the Barrowold on the second day of the Wyrdmeet, the day known as The One Clan begins. Marked by two significant ceremonies followed by a lively feast at sunset, this sacred day celebrates unity, transformation, and belonging. The two ceremonies, the Clan Coupling, where clanless witches are welcomed to the Wyrdkin, and the Clan Crossing, where established witches may choose to join a new clan, embody the Wyrdkin’s belief in balance and renewal.

The Clan Coupling

The Barrowold

Most witches in Starfall Rest go to the Sisters Ardent for training as they are well-known and have a proven and polished curriculum for students. However, not all witches resonate with the Moon Citadel, and these witches often find their way to the Wyrdmeet to follow a different magical path.

At dawn on the second day of the Wyrdmeet, aspiring witches—those who have journeyed from far and wide seeking belonging—are summoned to a sacred circle within the Barrowold itself. Chosen representatives from each clan form a ring around the aspirants, guiding them through a meditative ritual to attune to the ley lines’ energy and the ancestral whispers of the Barrowold.

Afterward, the aspirants undergo a vetting process, which is both practical and mystical:

  • Questions of Purpose: Clan members ask thoughtful questions to understand the aspirants’ motivations, magical strengths, and personal philosophies.

  • Spiral Reading: An elder witch interprets the aspirant’s connection to the spiral of light and shadow, seeking signs of harmony, balance, or potential discord.

  • Magic Trial: Aspirants perform a simple magical act—be it conjuring a light, weaving a shadow, or invoking nature’s energy—demonstrating their unique talents and their willingness to embrace the Wyrdkin’s philosophy.

Only those who resonate with the Wyrdkin’s values and the Barrowold’s ancient magic are invited to the next stage.

The Spiral Glade

As the sun dips into the west and shadows stretch across the Barrowold, the Wyrdkin gather in the Spiral Glade, a large glade adjacent to the Barrowold, festively adorned with vibrant banners and warm, twinkling lanterns. Both ceremonies, jubilant and full of life, take place here. Each clan claims a corner of the glade, their members gathering, where long tables are set for feasting. Soon, the clearing hums with chatter and laughter as the clans assemble, each in their respective corner of the glade, in anticipation.

The leader of Clan Wildenwood, acting as master of ceremonies, strides to the center of the glade and crashes two large planks of oak together in a booming clap, commanding silence. Standing tall, the leader bellows, “We are Clan Wyrdkin!”

In one thunderous voice, the gathered Wyrdkin respond together, their chant echoing through the Spiral Glade and into the evening sky, “One is all, and all is one. We are one family. We are One Clan.”

As the echoes fade into the stillness, the leader’s voice rings out once more, rich with resonance and welcome, “Welcome, our clanless kin! Today, the spiral turns, and you shall find your family!” The clanless witches then step into the center of the glade with the leader.

Clan Speeches and Spirited Boasts

A speaker from each clan steps forward to extol the virtues, wonders, and unique strengths of their group. These speeches are often sprinkled with playful exaggeration, adding levity to the gathering. For example, Clan Sylvereach’s speaker, a witch clutching a lute, might declare their mastery of song and sound so divine that even the stars pause to listen. Clan Wildenwood’s representative, with a knowing smirk, might counter that no melody, however heavenly, could rival their connection to the spirit realm; after all, what other clan boasts an audience that’s both living and dead?

As the speeches continue, the boasts grow increasingly humorous. Clan Tittlymoore, with their wind-swept wildness, might claim their bond with the plains’ wild horses makes them the swiftest and freest of all. To this, Clan Faedarke’s speaker might raise an eyebrow and retort, “Horses? Mere kittens compared to the creatures of the Faedarke! Try calming a a thousand-year-old Elderhollow after some baby squirrels have run amok in his branches.” The glade often erupts into laughter and playful retorts at such bold claims, as the clans trade lighthearted jabs.

By the end of the speeches, the aspirants are caught between admiration and amusement. Each clan’s wit, charm, and unique qualities shine through, leaving the aspirants both entertained and inspired as they prepare to make their choices.

Once all the clans have spoken, the leader of Clan Wildenwood addresses the aspirants:
“Find your family, our new sisters and brothers. Let your hearts guide you, and may the spiral bring you to balance.”

The aspirants then join their chosen clans, welcomed with cheers and warm embraces.

The Clan Crossing

The Clan Crossing allows Wyrdkin witches to change their clan, whether to pursue a new passion, develop a unique talent, or embrace a different way of life.

Once the clanless witches are welcomed, the leader of Clan Wildenwood crashes the two planks of oak together again and bellows, “The Crossing is here.” The glade falls silent, anticipation building like a charged spell. Then, with a resounding cry, the leader shouts, “Who are the kin that cross the wold?”

Witches wishing to switch clans stand, and the clearing erupts with noise as their presence is met with cheers and teasing calls from their peers. The leader shouts above the din, “Ye family calls, sisters and brothers. Find ye hearts!” As the crossing witches move slowly to the center of the glade, the noise grows into joyous chaos, as the clans clamor for their favor, each vying for them to join their ranks with promises of companionship, humorous boasts, and general mayhem.

When all the crossing witches reach the center of the glade, the leader crashes the two planks of oak together again, signaling the witches to make their choices. With a burst of determination, each witch then runs to their chosen clan, where they are swept up into hugs and greeted with exuberant cheers and a place among their new family.

To return to a former clan, the witch must go through The Clan Crossing again, reaffirming the Wyrdkin’s commitment to the ever-turning spiral.

The Feast of One

The Feast of One: Wyrdkin from all clans gather beneath lantern-lit trees to share food, laughter, and stories as the day of The One Clan winds to a close.

As the ceremonies conclude and the sun sets, the glade is transformed into a place of celebration. Under the lantern-lit trees, the Wyrdkin feast together in celebration of both old and new connections. The One Clan embodies the Wyrdkin’s belief in balance and renewal, allowing witches to follow their hearts and find the place where they can best thrive.

Commune with the Ancestors

By day, the Wyrdkin honor their ancestors with offerings of flowers, candles, and handmade charms, each imbued with personal memories or hopes. Spiral dances are performed atop the mossy barrows, their movements weaving light and shadow into patterns that resonate with the spirits. At the heart of these rituals is the brewing of Ethereal Bloom Tea, a special herbal infusion crafted from rare plants found deep within the Faedarke. This tea allows Wyrdkin witches to attune their senses, opening their minds and hearts to the whispers of the departed.

As the veil between worlds is thinnest during the Wyrdmeet, the spirits of ancestors are more vivid and present. Wyrdkin witches meditate among the graves, sipping their tea and listening intently for guidance. These moments are deeply personal, filled with both reverence and quiet joy, as ancestors often offer wisdom in riddles, visions, or even a shared sense of peace.

At night, the Barrowold transforms into a glowing festival of light. Lanterns hang from the towering evergreens, their warm glow mingling with the soft luminescence of the spirits who gather. Feasts are laid out under the open sky, and laughter, music, and the rich aroma of shared meals fill the air. Wyrdkin believe their ancestors join these celebrations, drawn to the vibrant energy of the living. It is not uncommon to see a Wyrdkin witch quietly sharing a cup of tea with an ethereal figure, their bond a reminder that the spiral of life and death never truly separates those who are connected by love.

The Council

For the leaders of the Wyrdkin clans, the Wyrdmeet also serves as an important council. Seated in a circle beneath the towering trees at the heart of the Barrowold, they gather in a sacred circle to discuss matters of importance, share knowledge, and resolve disputes. Each leader brings news from their forest, ensuring the clans remain united even as they grow and adapt to their unique homes.

This council is also a time for collaboration, as the Wyrdkin work together to address threats, nurture their world trees, and refine the art of spiral magic. Decisions are made by consensus, reflecting the harmony that lies at the heart of Wyrdkin philosophy.

Legacy

The Wyrdmeet is a cornerstone of Wyrdkin culture, embodying their values of balance, connection, and growth. It is a time for reflection, celebration, and renewal, bringing together witches from across Starfall Rest to honor their shared history and strengthen their bonds.
